It is a unit of National Grocers, itself a unit of Loblaw Companies Limited. Stores are typically operated by a franchise owner. Many of the stores were originally Ottawa-area outlets of the defunct Quebec-based Steinberg's grocery chain.

The IGA banner is the largest gathering of independent grocers in Canada, meaning that every store is managed individually by a local grocer – an integral member of the community. In fact, the province of Quebec proportionally has twice more independent grocers than anywhere else in Canada.

As of October 2020, Walmart no longer offers their ad match program. At the time of this article posting, Atlantic Superstore, Farm Boy, Food Basics, Foodland, Fortino's, Loblaws, Longo's, Independent Grocer, Metro, Pharmaprix, Rexall, Safeway, Shoppers Drug Mart, Sobeys, Walmart, and Zehrs, do not price match.

No Frills (currently styled NOFRILLS and formerly styled nofrills) is a Canadian chain of discount supermarkets, owned by Loblaw Companies Limited, a subsidiary of George Weston Limited. There are over 200 franchise stores located in nine Canadian provinces.
